I am often asked by clients, associates, and friends what the world of real estate work is truly like, and whether or not I believe pursuing a career in real estate would be a fit for them.
So, what exactly is it like to be a real estate broker?
I have had the great fortune to have worked in a variety of industries – everything from book publishing to nonprofit management to entrepreneurship education to business/entrepreneur consulting and more. What I love about real estate is that it affords me the opportunity to bring together all of my interests, experience, and education. Real estate also enables me to tap into my creative side and express innovative ideas each and every day.
While it is difficult to paint a “day in the life,” as every day is very different, on any day, you could do the following: meet with prospective Seller clients, research comparables and cost replacement value, and provide them with an estimate of listing price range for their property; or, you could meet with Buyer clients, listen intently to the kind of property they are seeking, research the properties within their parameters, and show them properties that are potential matches.
You may spend an entire day mapping out a creative and targeted marketing approach that is custom made for a new listing and/or setting a strategy for new ways to bring attention to existing listings so they are kept “top of mind” in the marketplace.
You may spend time working on existing deals under contract, ensuring each item on the Due Diligence list is carefully executed. This may mean attending home inspections, walking property with surveyors or environmental health inspectors, and/or meeting with contractors to communicate repair requests.
You may spend time working on your online marketing, social media marketing, and other media exposure by blogging, posting, and keeping fresh content in front of your market’s eyes and ears.
Or, you could spend hours writing and negotiating Offers, ensuring your clients’ interests are well represented, and that they receive the best possible price and terms in the deal.
You will work closely with other agents and firms, attorneys, and lenders to cooperatively serve your clients and ensure their deal closes in a smooth and timely fashion. You will be communicating very frequently with your clients, updating them on everything from showing feedback and marketing exposure ideas for Seller clients to sending new listings on the market that may be of interest to Buyer clients.
What about the personal characteristics and skills needed for success in real estate? A superb real estate agent possesses an entrepreneurial mindset, is unwaveringly ethical and hard working, is devoted to providing extraordinary customer experiences, is agile and tenacious, is an empathic listener, and is passionate about life-long learning and growing.
